Gnomes first popped up during the Renaissance, when Paracelsus introduced the underground humanoids in A Book of Nymphs, Sylphs, Pygmies, and Salamanders, and on the Other Spirits. Statues of these mischievous, wise creatures have been used to watch over gardens or welcome guests into homes since the late 1700s.
